In My Mailbox 24/7/11

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme where book bloggers share all the new books that have made it into their house this week whether from the bookstore, for review or from the library. I've lost my camera connecting lead so there are no photos this week!

My New Books

Eight Keys by Suzanne le Fleur (thank you to Puffin UK for sending this ARC for review)

Another blogger's ARC.

I haven't read this author's debut Love Aubrey but I've heard nothing but praise for it so I'm looking forward to reading my first book of hers. This is also the first ARC I've been sent for review (I've won one before), which is very exciting!

Shadows of the Moon by Zoe Marriott  (bought for Kindle)

This one's a loose retelling of Cinderella and I love fairytales and have seen such positive reviews of it that I just couldn't resist buying it in the Kindle Summer Sale for the bargain price of £2.50! It's actually the first Kindle book I've bought as the rest of the books on my Kindle have been free or from NetGalley.

From my school library:

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

I know so many bloggers who are huge Dessen fans and when I was recommended her by Jess from Jess Hearts Books when asking for contemporary book recommendations, I finally decided to try her. Thank you to everyone who has recommended Dessen's books to me!

The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory

As many of my long term blog readers will know, I love historical fiction but surprisingly I've never read any of Philippa Gregory's books. This is because I've heard there's some inappropriate content for my age but I've decided to try one now.

Arabella by Georgette Heyer

I've read this before and it was my first Heyer so I really want to re-read it this summer. If you're looking to try Heyer's regency romance books, then Arabella would be a great one to start off with.

Have you read any of these books? What did you get in your mailbox?

I don't have much time to visit other's IMM posts this week because I have a friend staying at the moment but I will try my best to get round to as many people as possible.

In My Mailbox 17/7/11

In My Mailbox is held at The Story Siren and is where book bloggers share what books have made it into their house each week:

Here's my haul for this week (all from my school library.) I don't have photos of the book this week because my cameras out of memory:

Ivy By Julie Hearn

I actually gave up on this one half way when I tried it before moving onto another book I'd been looking forward to for ages but I thought I'd give it another try this summer. Hopefully I'll enjoy it more this time =)

Ash by Malinda Lo

This one's a retelling of Cinderella and I love fairytale retellings so hopefully this one will be no exception!

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I've been meaning to read this series for AGES, especially after seeing all the buzz for the last book Mockingjay. I'm hoping I won't be disappointed because of the hype.

Falling Leaves by Adelin Yen Mah

I studied Chinese Cinderella a few years ago at school and Adelin Yen Mah's life story really interested me because there's so much to learn about Chinese culture and history so I decided to try this follow up.

The Traitor's Smile by Patricia Elliot

This is the sequel to The Pale Assassin, which I already have out from the library so I'm hoping to finish them both during the summer holidays. I've loved other books I've read about the French Revolution so this series sounds brilliant.

In My Mailbox 3/7/11

In My Mailbox is hosted by The Story Siren and is where book bloggers share what books have made it into their homes this week!

Here's what I got this week:

Cascade by Lisa T Bergren (bought)

I got so excited when this arrived because I loved the first book in this YA time travel series and gushed about it in my review last week. If you haven't read Waterfall, then you really should because I've seen nothing but positive reviews of it. I can't wait to get to this one soon....

Here Lies Bridget by Paige Haribson (thanks to Mira Ink)

This is being released in the UK and I've heard some really good things about it. Plus the cover looks perfect for summer =)

The books below I got from Sunpenny Publishing, the company I'm starting work with doing social networking and manuscript reading so I can get an idea of what kinds of books they like to publish:

The Mountains Inbetween by Julie McGowan
Just One More Summer by Julie McGowan
Going Astray by Christine Moore
My Sea Is Wide by Rowland Evans

In My Mailbox 26/6/11- 2 weeks

In My Mailbox is hosted by Kristi at the Story Siren and is where bloggers share all the books that have made it into their houses each week!

I didn't take part in IMM last week so here's all the books I got in the past fortnight:

Pegasus by Robin McKilney
(many thanks to Penguin for sending me a review copy)

I've heard really mixed things about this book but I couldn't resist that gorgeous cover and the fairy tale fantasy sounding plot. In truth, that cover looks even more beautiful in real life. I can't wait to see what I think of it =)

Sorceress by Celia Rees
(library)

This is the sequel to Witch Child by Celia Rees, which I have yet to start but I've now got both books out of my school library for the summer. That's the awesome thing about school library books over the summer- you don't have to worry about taking them back for six weeks! I'll probably be taking lots more out before the end of term. I've read The Fool's Girl by Celia Rees and I hope I like this series as much as that.

Boys Don't Cry by Malorie Blackman
(library)

Malorie Blackman is visiting my school this Autumn ( YAY!) and since I haven't read any of her books yet even though I've been recommended them so much, I thought I'd start with this one. I read the first chapter on Friday and it was a great start.

Have you read any of these books- what did you think of them? What did you get in your mailbox this week?

In My Mailbox 12/6/11

A typically British postbox with pretty flowers :)

In My Mailbox is hosted by The Story Siren and is where bloggers share all the books that have made it into their house each week!

This last fortnight I got some fantastic books that I'm really excited to read. Here's all of them I got over the past two weeks:

For review:

David by Mary Hoffman

I'm taking part in the blog tour for this book in July and of course it's historical so I can't wait to read it! Oh, and did I mention it's set in Italy?

Haunting Violet by Alexandra Harvey

I haven't read any of Alexandra Harvey's books yet but I've heard great things about her books and the cover's really striking for it (it reminds me of Lauren Kate's covers because it's by the same artist). I'm interested to see what I make of the ghost and Victorian theme....

Tempest Rising

I love mermaids so I hope I enjoy this one too. The UK cover is totaly different to the US cover so I didn't realise i'd seen it before until I looked it up on Goodreads.

Won

Die For Me by Amy Plum (ARC)

Thank you to Emma from Book Angel's Booktopia for holding this fabulous giveaway.
I love the sound of the setting of the book- Paris!

In My Mailbox is hosted by The Story Siren

Pretty spring mailbox.

This week I'm showing the books I've got over the past 2 weeks because I didn't do an IMM last week. Here's what I got:

The Resistance by Gemma Malley (thank you to ComaCalm for sending me it)

I've actually read this one and the rest of this dystopian trilogy and have the first book The Declaration already so I couldn't resist a lovely hardcover copy! It was written a long time before the new wave of dystopians flooding the book world and if you haven't read this series then I really recommend it

Daughter of Venice by Donna Napoli (thank you to ComaCalm again)

As you probably know if you're a long term reader, I love historical fiction and this one's set in Italy so all the better. I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like.

Girl 15 Flirting For England by Sue Limb (thank you to Bloomsbury)

I read this one this week and the antics of 15 year old Jess were pretty hilarious! Review to come soon.

Mad Love by Suzanne Selfors (thank you to Bloomsbury)

This one looks like a cute, fun read.

Precious Norman Honour by A.L Stumo (thank you to the author)

Another historical-yay! It's based on a real siege that's happening in the 12th century told through the eyes of a young girl. It sounds right up my street so I hope I enjoy it.

In My Mailbox 8/5/11

In My Mailbox is hosted by The Story Siren and where bloggers share what books have made it into their homes this week. All descriptions from Goodreads.

I had another great book week this week so I'm very happy :D Here's what I got:

Flawless by Lara Chapmen
(thank you to the lovely people at Bloomsbury UK for sending me this for review)

The rather
unique cover!
Burke is just about perfect. She's got killer blue eyes, gorgeous blond hair, and impeccable grades. There's just one tiny-all right, enormous-flaw: her nose. But even that's not so bad. Sarah's got the best best friend and big goals for print journalism fame.
On the first day of senior year, Rock Conway walks into her journalism class and, well, rocks her world. Problem is, her best friend, Kristen, falls for him too. And when Rock and Kristen stand together, it's like Barbie and Ken come to life. So when Kristen begs Sarah to help her nab Rock, Sarah does the only thing a best friend can do-she agrees. For someone so smart, what was she thinking?
This hip retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac is filled with hilariously misguided matchmaking, sweet romance, and a gentle reminder that we should all embrace our flaws.I read this one as soon as I got and it as amazing! My review should be coming sometime in the next few weeks.

I read this one as soon as I got it and it was amazing! My review should be coming sometime in the next few weeks.

Between Shades Of Grey by Ruta Sepetys (won)

In 1941, fifteen-year-old Lina is preparing for art school, first dates, and all that summer has to offer. But one night, the Soviet secret police barge violently into her home, deporting her along with her mother and younger brother. They are being sent to Siberia. Lina's father has been separated from the family and sentenced to death in a prison camp. All is lost.
Lina fights for life, fearless, vowing that if she survives she will honor her family, and the thousands like hers, by documenting their experience in her art and writing. She risks everything to use her art as messages, hoping they will make their way to her father's prison camp to let him know they are still alive.
It is a long and harrowing journey, and it is only their incredible strength, love, and hope that pull Lina and her family through each day. But will love be enough to keep them alive?

Thank you very much to Leanna @ Daisy Chain Book Reviews for hosting this giveaway and for Penguin for providing the giveaway copies. I've heard so many fantastic things about this one and I love war set books so I'm excited about reading it.

White Crow by Markus Sedgewick (library)

A modern gothic thriller about what awaits us after death - angels or the devil.

This really isn't the type of book I would normally read (it looks scary!) but I'm working through the Carnegie Medal 2011 Shortlist with my school book club and the author is coming to my school this Friday. So I can't meet him without having read one of his books....

Books from Vickie @ Coma Calm's Corner

Coma Calm very generously held a competition for 3 UK bloggers to receive books she would like to give away to free her bookshelves and I'm lucky to be one of them- thank you so much for doing this! Here are the books I chose that she sent me:

Troubadour by Mary Hoffman

A story of persecution and poetry, love and war set in 13th century Southern France. As crusaders sweep through the country, destroying all those who do not follow their religion, Bertrand risks his life to warn others of the invasion. As a troubadour, Bertrand can travel without suspicion from castle to castle, passing word about the coming danger. In the meantime Elinor, a young noblewoman, in love with Bertrand, leaves her comfortable home and family and becomes a troubadour herself. Danger encircles them both, as the rising tide of bloodshed threatens the fabric of the society in which they live.

Historical fiction- yay!

Epitaph Road by David Patneaude

2097 is a transformed world. Thirty years earlier, a mysterious plague wiped out 97 percent of the male population, devastating every world system from governments to sports teams, and causing both universal and unimaginable grief. In the face of such massive despair, women were forced to take over control of the planet—and in doing so they eliminated all of Earth's most pressing issues. Poverty, crime, warfare, hunger . . . all gone.

It sounds like an intriguing dystopian :)

The Prophecy Of The Gems by Flavia Bujor

The Prophecy of the Stones tells the story of three teenage girls-Jade, Opal, and Amber-who are chosen to fulfill an ancient prophecy. Although strangers, they must learn to trust one another with their lives as they embark on an epic journey, armed only with magical stones. They must leave their families and friends to battle fierce enemies in a magical land called Fairytale, where evil is unknown. In a parallel world, a young girl named Joa fights for her life in a hospital in Paris. While she is dreaming, she is transported to a magical realm where the three young heroines fight a spectacular battle. Their success or failure will determine the fate of Fairytale . . . and Joa's survival.

This one was written by a fifteen year old so I'm fascinated to see what it's like the and I love a good fairy tale like story.

In My Mailbox- The Birthday Edition!

In My Mailbox is a meme held by the lovely Kristi at The Story Siren, which encourages bloggers to share what books have made it into their house each week.

This week was the best book week EVER... because it was my birthday yesterday and I got some awesome bookish presents! Note: I won't be including descriptions this week because my Internet is being really slow at the moment.

What I got:

                                              A Kindle!

I had been toying up getting a Kindle for a while because I always thought that I'd be completely loyal to print books and never buy an e-reader but curiosity, the good things I've been hearing about Kindle and the lure of sites like Net Galley got the better of me. I'm so glad that they did! I've spent all afternoon reading on it and downloading all the free classics and I'm starting to love it. Though, it's just an accompaniment to my reading because my Kindle could *never* replace my physical books... it's a totally different reading experience! I'm planning to do a post with my thoughts on it soon :)

Books (thank you you to my parents):

Entwined by Heather Dixon
Daughter Of Xanadu by Dori Jones Yang
Waterfall by Lisa T Bergen
Jane Austen Stole My Boyfriend by Cora Harrison

These were all on my birthday wishlist so I'm really happy and can't wait to read them! You can have a look at why I want to read these books on my wishlist post. The cover of Entwined is even more beautiful in person :)

Kindle books I downloaded:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
Little Women by Louise May Alcott

For review:
Jane Austen: A Life Revealed
Jane Austen- A Life Revealed by Catherine Reef (thanks to Net Galley)
The Betrayal Of Maggie Blair by Elizabeth Laird (thanks to Net Galley)
