In My Mailbox 13/3/11

In My Mailbox is hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren and encourages bloggers share the new books that have made it into their homes this week.

Here's what I got this week:

For review:

Chime by Franny Billingsley (thanks to Bloomsbury UK)

I hadn't heard of this on before it arrived through my postbox and it's really not what I would normally choose to read but I'm always up for different things AND there's sparkles on the cover (that's always a good thing!) Except, just looking up the synopsis on Goodreads, I found out it's historical too (set in the early twentieth century), which is doesn't mention on the cover, so now I like the sound of it more.

Bumped by Megan Mcafferty (from NetGalley)

When a virus makes everyone over the age of eighteen infertile, would-be parents pay teen girls to conceive and give birth to their children, making teens the most prized members of society. Girls sport fake baby bumps and the school cafeteria stocks folic-acid-infused food.
Sixteen-year-old identical twins Melody and Harmony were separated at birth and have never met until the day Harmony shows up on Melody’s doorstep. Up to now, the twins have followed completely opposite paths. Melody has scored an enviable conception contract with a couple called the Jaydens. While they are searching for the perfect partner for Melody to bump with, she is fighting her attraction to her best friend, Zen, who is way too short for the job.
Harmony has spent her whole life in Goodside, a religious community, preparing to be a wife and mother. She believes her calling is to convince Melody that pregging for profit is a sin. But Harmony has secrets of her own that she is running from.
When Melody is finally matched with the world-famous, genetically flawless Jondoe, both girls’ lives are changed forever. A case of mistaken identity takes them on a journey neither could have ever imagined, one that makes Melody and Harmony realize they have so much more than just DNA in common.

I'm so excited to get this one because I'm interviewing the author for A Cornucopia of Dystopia hosted by A Tapestry Of Words and The Bookish Type. I have got one book from Net Galley before and found it really hard to read it on the computer so it didn't work out but this time I'm determined to get to the end. Also, I'm hoping to get a Kindle for my birthday in late April so it should be a lot easier then!

From library

Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing. They didn’t understand that once love -- the deliria -- blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the governments demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Holoway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy.
But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love.

I'm reviewing this one for the A Cornocupia of Dystopia event and I know there was so much hype around the blogosphere that some people were left disappointed but I loved it and was left feeling 'wow' by the end of the book, mainly because of Lauren Oliver's writing. You'll have to wait until my review to find out more!

What did you get in your mailbox this week?

Reminder: I'm holding a US/Canada giveaway of Dark Mirror by J.M Putney. To find out more and enter, click on the link.

  15. Oh, I forgot to respond to your Downton Abbey comment! Totally agree with you about Sybil-Branson, I'm not really feeling the chemistry between those two. I can't decide if I'm cheering for Matthew and Mary or not, but that's mostly because I can't decide whether I like Mary's character, LOL. Definitely think the whole WWI announcement will shake a lot of things up for season 2, maybe we'll see one of the characters enlisting? I'm betting it will provide more opportunities for Lady Sybil's feminist cause as well.

  17. I like the idea of 'Delirium'. The idea of love is a virus is an interesting premise.
